-----Question-----
Hi, I need to remove the above unit from my car.How do I do it? Do I need a special tool? or can I use a thin strip of metal each side of the unit to release hidden catches? Thanks for your help.
-----Answer-----
The reason I could not give you clear instructions/answer to your question is you did NOT give the year, make and model of the car you are installing the unit into!  If you do, I can tell you the whole story!  All cars install differently!

You must know the unique method for the car you have it installed in to.

Go to:  www.installdr.com

where you will find the procedures for some older cars. If not, you can search the internet using google or similar search engines.

In some  cases there are special removal tools that must be made or purchased in order to succeed.

You sound very clever, so you may be able to figure it out by yourself, but I recommend you look at a few on installdr.com to give you some ideas about how various approaches are done.

Good Luck,

Hi,
Did you get the radio problem resolved?
Let me know if I can help with anything further.

Clarion removal tools look like the ones in this web page:

I think you can use a bent or formed metal coathanger for the same purpose.

The radio unit is held in by clip springs on the side. The tool is inserted into the holes on each side of the radio; the spring clips depressed so the radio unit can slide out.

What I don't know is whether this radio/car has two clips on each side or only one.  You will have to test both methods.

See the pictures on page 3 of the following (which is not your car, but it is similar):

Hope this helps you in removing the radio unit.

There may be a fuse in line or on the back of the radio; it has been along time since I have seen the protoge.

Also, if you have access to  a voltmeter, you should check the 12v lines feeding the radio.  You can trace backwards to find out where the voltage is lost from easily.  (A good car vom is at Walmart electrical department for $9.83; there are others but this is the handiest and cheapest around for car work.)

Let me know if you need more guidance or ideas.
