Audio Systems: 1999 Ford Explorer CD player, laser diode, ford factory

Question
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer. I bought this car in 2004 and replaced the am/fm radio with a Ford factory cd player. Recently when ever I  try to put a cd in the slot it will make this loud clicking noise, spit out the cd then take it back into the slot. It repeats this about 5 times before it says CD ERROR. Occasionally it will take a cd in the slot and play it with out any problems. I feel like it has some problem grasping the cd because if I hit my dash once it will begin to play the cd. Is there any way to fix this?

Answer
Fixing it may be just to keep banging on the dash!  The problem may be related to a weak laser diode that reads sometimes and sometimes not.  When you bang on it at the right time and force it may jiggle the optical pickup assembly just enough to align it for better reading of the digital micropits on the disc.

Ordinarily, these kinds of problems are, 80% of the time, expensive to repair. Expensive enough that replacing the unit may be a less expensive option.  But, you will have to decide that.

There are many aftermarket units that will fit your vehicle for $79 and up.  I like

www.crutchfield.com

for checking out the products that will fit and the wiring harness you may need or brackets to make it fit perfectly in your car.

If you take a look at

www.installdr.com

and study the installation diagrams and pictures you may decide you can install a new unit yourself - or not.

The other option is to take it into a install/repair shop (don't take it to a ford dealer; they know nothing about electronic systems) and have them look at it and give you a repair estimate.  My estimate, without seeing the unit and poking around, would be $100 to $175 for the repair.  And, if it turns out to be a weak laser diode I assure you it is more sensible to replace the whole unit.

Hope this helps.  How is the car running; It is a great vehicle!
