Audio Systems: Aiwa NSX-D707 Amplifier doesnt display, aiwa nsx, glove treatment

Question
We were trying to hook up my Aiwa NSX-D707 stereo system.  I think we have it all done correctly but the amplifier (I think that is the component with the digital disply - i.e. the clock) has no digital display and we can't get any sound from any component.  Do you have any suggestions for what we can check or do you think the machine is broken?

Answer
Dear Janet,

The Aiwa NSX-D707 is a fairly old component, and, like so many "all-in-one" systems, is probably showing its age. While Aiwa systems are known for lasting longer than most "all-in-one" systems, their practical useful life is +/- 5 years. IMHO anything beyond that is a bonus. They're not just made that well.

I had a very old Aiwa NSX330 (15 years), which had gotten the kid glove treatment, but it finally started doing weird things, and we had to let it go.

Yes, it's broken and repairing it will probably cost more than it's worth. Check any user-servicable fuses and replace them if they're broken. Make sure the MUTE function isn't accidentally engaged. Double check your speaker connections. Try all the sound options (tuner, tape, CD) to make sure just one function isn't, er, malfunctioning. If you still get no sound, it's probably beyond the pale, and you should think about replacing it.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
