Audio Systems: Stereo Speaker-sound cuts off & on, volume pot, silent speaker

Question
I have a pair of Advent Legacy III speakers hooked up to a
Technics AV control stereo receiver. I've had the system for
about 10 years, but recently the sound from one of my speakers
began to cut off & on. (If I swing the volume up and down, I can
get the silent speaker back on sound, for a while.)

I switched the wires into the back of the receiver, and the
problem jumped from one speaker to the other. A friend
suggested the problem was dust inside the receiver, but I've just
opened it up and cleaned it out with a can of air, and the
problem persists.

Short of taking the receiver into a shop, can you suggest any
solution to this problem?

Thank you very much for your time.

Yours,
Sean Ledden

Answer
Dear Sean,

Moving the volume pot and getting sound would at first indicate that the problem's with the pot, except that it would affect both speakers. Hard to say why that works temporarily. Plainly, one of your output channels has had something come loose or fail. Unless you have a trained eye, it would be difficult to tell just by looking at the circuit board. I suggest that you have the receiver bench tested by a qualified repair technician. If it's a loose wire, then they'll resolder. If it's a failed part, they'll replace it.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
