Answer
Dear Fran,

If it's a Marantz CD63 or CD67, it's one of the better CD players made in the last decade. Depending on what's wrong with it, it may worth be repairing. From what you describe, my guess is that the motor's drive belt has either stretched out of shape or become disengaged. There's an outside chance that the laser has become misaligned, but that's rare. Either way, it's not something you can fix on your own. You need to take it to a qualified repair service for a diagnostic and estimate.

However, if you don't use it very often, I suggest getting a DVD player with which to play CDs and selling the Marantz. I no longer recommned stand-alone CD players. This is because even the least expensive (say, Coby) CD players have audio electronics at least equal to if not superior to those in any CD player. This is because the specifications for audio playback for DVDs are more recent and more comprehensive than the specifications for CDs, which are about 25 years old. Secondly, if a cheap DVD player breaks, you throw it away and buy a new one.

Don't pay any attention to the audio party line that you have to pay a lot of money for a decent sounding CD player. They're all digital, and all use the same decoding algorithms. There are few, if any, appreciable, audible differences between the cheapest and most expensive.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
