Question
Yes I am talking about an adaptor for my cell phone.  I have already checked the fuses and they are all ok.  Thats why I am a little stumped!!

I already emailed you once and received an answer to my question but it was deleted....Im sorry.  Could you answer it again?
I have a 96 Acura 3.5 RL and I plugged in a car charger and the radio and cigarette lighter went out.  Any suggestions on what happened and how to fix?
Thank you
Tara

Tara,

This is the 1st I have seen of this question, so it is likely that you asked a different expert about this the first time.

By 'car charger'.. are you referring to a battery charger?
Or perhaps an adaptor for a cell phone ect was plugged into the cigarette lighter receptacle?

In either case, the 1st thing I would look into (or would 'have looked into by a technician') would be the fuse for that 'radio/cigarette' circuit.

Sorry for the lost email, I hope this sheds some light onto the matter for you.

Sincerely,
Jerry Mael

Answer
Ok then :)
A few more things to check.

*It is entriely possible that the lighter receptacle has inadverdantly got some sort of foreign object inside it.
EG.. A dime or a penny or similar item that would cause a short. This must be checked and the foreign item corrected [removed] if this is the case.

*Your AC inverter may be bad causing the fuse to blow. Try it in a different vehicle to test its' operation while the adaptor is cool to test this idea.

*Your car likely has a 'fusible link' in the factory wiring in case of a shorted circuit. It is a fuse built into the wire and usualy is found near (within 18" of) the battery.
If all fuses are good, that is what I would check (or have checked) next.

It is highly unlikely [but not impossible] that your radio AND cigarette lighter would go bad at the same time... and since they are oftentimes on the same fuse, I would suggest testing the fuse(s) for them with a test lite to be 100% sure.

Jerry Mael
