Audio Systems: 1996 ford escort stereo wiring diagram, ford escort wagon, blowing the fuses

Question
I've just removed the standard AM/FM radio that came stock on my recently purchased (used) 1996 ford escort wagon, in order to replace it with a cassette/am fm deck that I've had.

For the life of me, I can't figure out the wiring color codes for the wires going into the car... theres two harnesses:  one for the speakers, and one for the power/ground/memory, but the color coding makes no sense to me, and I've already blown two fuses in trial and error.

Can you tell me (or refer me to a website) for the color coding/identification in the fords system?

Answer
Shannon,

very bad way to start out a letter i hate to get these because you might have opened up some very big problems from blowing the fuses .. might have melted some wires or burnt up the new unit .. but let me start at the begining it sounds like you made the first mistake in installing which is cutting the stock/factory harness plug off and trying to wire the factory wires directly to the new stereos wires .. now if you can wire the old plug back on color for color .. and go by radio shack ( this is how you should have started out ) and pick up a wire harness adapter for your specific model of escort *ask a salesperson* it will be around 8-12 bucks this is color coded to match your new units harness or it has labels so everything is easy as cake you simply wire the adapter to your new units harness and plug into your factory plug .. simple as that .. now if you cant wire the old plug back on ( which is very rare you can ) go check out www.streetdreams.com/wires/ they should have a diagram to help you get the wiring straight.. this is a very common mistake i get these questions all the time just because people dont know about the adapter its cheap and easy and looks professional and its removeable so its a win win ... hope this helps you out if you need anything else just let me know

thanks
