Audio Systems: Nextel phone interference, kenwood cd player, gage wire

Question
I have a Kenwood CD player that is about 8 years old, I have used this deck in a few different work vehicles. I get interference through the speakers when I use a Nextel type phone/two way radio. I have installed this deck in many different work vehicles and it happens every time. I have never had a problem with other decks and Nextel phones. I am guessing that it could have something to do with the way it is grounded; I normally use a wiring harness. Should I ground the deck separately (without the harness) if so what is the best way to ground the deck, I have been told to use a heavy gage wire and make it as short as possible and also have been told to ground it directly to the battery.
No separate amps are used, any suggestions?

Thanks, Larry

Answer
Hello Larry,
A ground wire may help with the interference. Run the ground wire from any screw on the rear of this CD unit and attach it directly to the metal fire wall under the dash. A good location is under one of the bolts holding the power brake assembly to the fire wall. You may also want to try wrapping the power speaker wires behind the CD unit with some kind of foil backed tape, this may help shield out the phone interference. I have found that interference from Cell phones can enter a radio through any unused speaker wire that is hanging behind a radio, this metallic tape sometimes will limit the interference.
