Audi Repair: A6 2001 Pd Diesel. Slow start when uphill, vapor lock, sensible answer

Hi,
haven't had a sensible answer from the local Audi dealer. My 2001 Audi A6 Avant diesel(pumpeduse) is notoriously difficult to start when cold and on level, and even worse when facing uphill. No problemo when facing downhill. Any suggestions? thnx!

Answer
You may have a vapor lock situation, or perhaps the glow plugs are not being activated.  The vapor lock may explain the different incline problem, but the glow plugs malfunction explain poor starting when cold.  Any other particulars about the behaviour that you have noticed which may help the diagnosis?  Let me know,  Jan
