Audi Repair: Audi A4 tranmission problem?, import specialist, audi a4

Question
Hi! I am buying a 1998 Audi A4 V6 2.8L at a pretty good price. However, the car has a starting problem and the engine revs up to 5000 rpm before the gear clicks. Once started the car runs smoothly. Somebody familiar with cars suggested that it could be a transmission issue. I just wonder if you could possibly give me a better explanation and maybe suggestions. If I need fix this problem, how much could it potentially cost? I mean maybe a higher limit and lower limit will be great! Thanks a lot for the help!

Answer
The starting problem can be numerous things, the gear change being sluggish (I'm assuming it is a tiptronic) can be an expensive transmission repair.  I would encourage you to get the car checked out by either a dealership or an import specialist to ensure you do not buy something which appears cheap but has a very high repair bill coming up.  Also get the engine codes read out, so that you don't discover more things after purchase.  Let me know,  Jan
