Question
QUESTION: 1994 sls temp gauge erratic it goes from 180 to 250 in seconds and will even shut off the engine but the engine temp is steady at 180. I changed the temp sensor but it still happens?

ANSWER: Hi,

Don't really understand the question. Are you checking with thermometer to determine engine is at 180 or is it actually going to 250?

These engines are aluminum and overheating destroys them quickly and the junkyards are filled with junk engines. How are you getting the reading of 180?

QUESTION: An external thermometer shows the engine temperature is staying at a constant 180. The computer shows the inaccurate temperature and shuts the engine down. I changed the temp sensor but that did not fix the problem. The engine is not overheating or losing coolant.

Answer
Hello,

I am sorry for the late response, but I have been extremely busy. I would answer this as I do others. You need to obtain a 1994 Cadillac service manual through Ebay or Craigs to diagnose without the guesswork. I know it may sound like a canned  answer that does not answer the question. The manual has flow charts to eliminate other problems so that you are not replacing perfectly good parts.
