Cadillac Repair: fuses, negative battery cable, amp fuse

Question
Ongoing problem with my 92 deville, 2 batteries in 2 months, mechanic checked alternator and starter and that all looks good.  Also no drains were showing he said.  a few months back i blew a fuse with the cigarette lighter so i put a higher amp fuse in the box, could that higher amp fuse be causing a drain?   It did solve the problem of fuses blowing though.

Answer
NEVER EVER put a higher amp fuse then what is recommended or you can burn the whole dash wiring harness and all the dash electronics.

The only way the battery can go flat is if there is an excessive amperage draw from the battery when the engine is OFF and all the doors are closed.

Maximum amperage draw is approx 1/2 amp (.50) using a digital amp meter on the negative battery cable OR the battery was NOT fully charged which they are NOT when you purchase a new one.

What you most likely have is a shorted cigarette lighter element.

1. Remove all the push-in lighters from the vehicle.

2. Put a digital amp meter on the negative battery cable and see how many amps your vehicle is drawing from the battery.

3. If it is above the recommended per above start by removing the fuse that you installed and check to see if the amperage dropped to the recommended amount.

4. If the amperage still does not drop to the recommended draw, start by replacing the fuse that you just pulled and remove another fuese and check the amperage draw and so forth with all the other fuses until you find the one that is causing the excessive draw from the battery and let me know which fuse it is that is causing the excessive battery amperage draw.

NOTE: GM lighters have always been a common problem causing this problem. Buy a new one and install the correct fuse.
