Cadillac Repair: 1978 A/C Conversion, cadillac hearse, conversion kit

Question
I am driving a 1978 Cadillac Hearse and would like to know if the R-12 can be converted to the new R-134. My compressor went south and I've already purchased a new one but haven't installed it yet. Should I replace any other parts?

Answer
If the A/C system has been inoperative for a long time and it has NO FREON in it due to a leak, I would suggest that you replace the receiver/drier (accumulator and purchase a conversion kit to install the R-1334 freon.

The ONLY drawback is that the hoses are not made for this new type of freon and tend to develop very very small leaks around the hoses and you will in most all cases have to add a can of freon every 3 months to allow for this normal leakage.
