Cadillac Repair: 1996 fleetwood brougham 5.7 LT1 engine, fleetwood brougham, lt1 engine

Question
Hi Tom,
The problem is that the engine will idle for 20 to 25 min and just shuts down. The warmer the air temp, the sooner it shuts down. It takes about an hour or more to cool. Once it does it restarts. This also happens while cruising at 70 MPH. Engine has a new MAF sensor, engine temp sensor in water pump, new opti cap and rotor. I bypassed the throttle body and disabled the air pump. I drained the coolant and replaced it with Dex-cool. When i did this I only got a little more than two gallons out. It would not more than that of the new stuff.

Any suggestions??

Answer
IS or HAS the check engine light ever illuminated on the dash while driving the car ?

When the car quits, Immediately check to see if you are getting spark to the spark plugs ?.

And IMMEDIATELY check to see if you can you hear the fuel pump run via:

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump..

Check your fuel pump pressure.

let me know.
