Cadillac Repair: Cooling fans and check steering system light ???, power steering rack, auto button

 Hi, on a '98 deville 4.6, the cooling fans only seem to operate when the 'ecno / auto'button is pushed! I've ran the temp. up to 210 degrees with the button off and the fans never started. Do I need to keep the ecno button on all the time for the fans to work or is their a deeper problem ?  Also  the ' service - steering system ' warning appears, I've checked the obvious, and the steering is just fine, any suggestions.
   This car was recently purchased at auction so I know nothing of it's past history.

Hi Wayne, About the steering message you will need to hook up a good quality scan tool and follow the trouble tree for the current codes to determine what caused the message to appear. There is a steering wheel sensor at the bottom of the steering column that goes bad and a time or 2 I have replaced the magnasteer valve on the power steering rack/gear but without testing or reading the codes it is guesswork as to what is wrong.
