Cadillac Repair: Check engine light, 1997 cadillac catera, cadillac catera

Question
I have a 1997 Cadillac Catera. While driving from work on a rainy day, my check engine light came on steady. It had been raining for about three days. Earlier that day I drove through a large puddle of water and filled up my tank with gas. (93% octane as always.) My car is vibrating, shakes and vibrate when I stop and does not have pick up.

Answer
Hi Joe Ann, Two things could be happening here. First off this is a classic symptom of a car that needs sparkplug wires replaced because if performance is poor with damp or rainy weather then the spark could be arcing to the engine because the wires are wet. If you haven't had a tune up done yet then this might be the time to do it. The check engine light could be unrelated to the running problem but that is where I would start...get the code(s) scanned and it might fix both problems. Hope that helps. Bill
