Chevrolet Repair: Smell, necessary procedure, time gas

Question
In June I purchased a 2009 Cobalt from a reputable lot. The car came fully checked out with a fresh set of tires. It had 62.8 on it and I drive her very little. (I've only filled her up 3 times since but I'm planning a major road trip in November). As a recent ex-New Yorker, it is my first owned vehicle. No problems for the first few months, but recently I've come to notice an issue...when I start her up cold (or as cold as it gets in south Florida) a subtle but unholy reek of fumes permeates the cabin, smelling like a melange of toxic petrochemicals, gasoline being only one. If I drive with the windows closed my eyes sting a bit. A mechanic has already raised the car and looked at the fuel line. He also pointed out the ABS lines and told me everything looked OK. I brought it to him because at the time gas was the overwhelming odor. I have since come to realize on my own that it is not necessary to pump the accelerator before turning the ignition. When I learned to drive that had been the necessary procedure, a habit I only now have broken myself of.  My impression is something is leaking onto the surface of the engine and when it heats up they burn up and stink for a while, but of course I'm probably wrong. What are your feelings on this? I've purchased a repair policy so I'm probably not too worried about repair costs.
Thank you

Answer
HI ALAN, WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL OF THESE COMPLAINTS IN THE PAST WITH THIS ENGINE. WHAT WE HAVE FOUND IS THERE ARE 1 OR MORE FUEL INJECTORS LEAKING WHEN THE ENG IS COLD,AFTER IT WARMS UP THE LEAK STOPS. WHEN THIS LEAKS THE FUEL WILL LEAK ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WHICH SMELLS..THE RUBBER O-RING AROND THE INJECTOR THAT SEALS AROUND THE FUEL RAIL LEAKS..YOUR MECAHNIC IS LOOKING IN THE WRONG AREA, HAVE HIM OR HER LOOK UP FRONT BY THE ENGINE AREA WHEN COLD.BY THE WAY>> YOU ARE [NOT PROBABLY WRONG.] YOU SOUND LIKE YOU ARE VERY IN TUNE WITH YOUR CAR. AS A NEW YORKER SHOULD BE.I AM FROM ROCHESTER.NY..GOOD LUCK, LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT WITH THIS...TOM..

PS.
WE HAVE HAD SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE PCV SYSTEM. SOMETIMES THE HOSE SPLITS AND THIS WILL CAUSE FUMES TO GET INTO THE CABIN AS WELL. HAVE YOUR TECH CK THE PCV SYSTEM AS WELL,JUST TO BE SURE..
