Chevrolet Repair: 93 S10 blazer 4.3 W rough idle, rich mixture, s10 blazer

Question
Bought this truck with a definite miss, did plugs cap rotor , wires all needed. Had engine code 13, tested TPS, was ok, O2 sensor failed test. Replaced engine code now gone.Motor idles a bit better but still strong smell of gas from pipe.Checked EGR valve clean no blockage. Compression is 130 to 135 except one at 110.
This is number one and it also appears to be dead. IF I pull the wire the is no noticeable change in the engine, compared to the other 5.Fuel pressure is 58-59 key on, key off 2 min @ 53 at 20 min 46 psi, Running 54 steady at idle.
If I crack the throttle it peaks at 60 at 2000 rpm drops to 50. engine seems strong on highway pulls a 20 ft boat no problem. The bad gas mileage . strong exhaust fumes and rough idle have me stumped. I should mention it always starts good.

Answer
Hi Randy,

Very detailed question.  Cool.  I know these are notorious for carbon build up in the EGR valve.  Carbon builds up in the motor and dislodges. Then carbon rocks get stuck in the EGR.  I know you checked that, but I thought I would meantion it.

If you suspect a dead #1, this may answer your own question.  110 is lower compared to the other readings.  Did you test this wet and dry?  To test wet, spray wd-40 in the cylinder and test again.  If the number goes up, the problem is rings.  110 is not a bad number.  It is considerably less than the other.

O2 failed test?  What test?  Did you actually read the O2?  That is the best way to see if it fails.  If it didn't cycle, it could be because it sensed the rich mixture and adjusted accordingly.  A new one will be more forgiving to a rich mixture.

Fuel pressure is not the problem.  Those readings are good.

I suspect a leaky injector, probably number one.  If that seems dead, is it because the plug is fouled?  Is it wet?  If so that injector is probably leaking.  YOu could also take a vacuum reading while idling.  Does the needle vibrate?  Could indicate a problem with number 1 valves, which could also cause compression issues.

Leaky injectors cause fuel economy loss, bad idle, performance issues, fouled plug (dead cylinder), O2 faulty readings, strong gas smell, ruin the CAT eventually, and so on.
