Chevrolet Repair: Rear differential, auto transmission fluid, rear axles

Question
My 2001 4X4 Silverado has a poping noise in the rear end. A complete used rear end with 23,000 miles will cost $1500 from a junk yard. Any suggestions what might be making this noise. It's hard to find any one who is willing to tackle this.

Answer
Hi Andy, There isn't very many problems with the rear axles on these trucks. The only thing might be a bad bearing but that would make a grinding type noise. Try this before doing any thing. Remove the drive shaft from the truck, Now fill the yoke will auto transmission fluid and reinstall the drive shaft. You will spill some fluid installing the shaft, use a steady push to get the shaft into the trans. Drive the truck and see if the noise is gone.

Let me know what happens
