Chevrolet Repair: rear end, impact gun, socket wrench

Question
how do I r&r the rear end yoke on my '75 blazer will i need to
replace seals or bearings? please and thank you

Answer
Hello Doug,
the yoke can be replaced without replacing bearings. it can be done without replacing the seal also, but I would sure take the opportunity to replace it then. You need a tool to keep the yoke from turning as you remove and replace the nut. There is also a sleeve inside that is supposed to be replaced when you remove the yoke. It collapses as you torque the nut, to preload the bearing.
I have reused the old sleeve, but the book says not to.
There is one thing you MUST NOT DO. DON'T use an impact gun on the nut in the yoke. That can chip gears inside the rear end, and ruin it. Use a holding tool, and a socket wrench.
