Chevrolet Repair: Choke light, oil pressure switch, monte carlo ss

Question
Some times the choke light comes on after the engine has been started (cold start). It comes on very dimly and only for a few seconds. When the engine is cold it runs very rough(feels like it is missing, have to keep foot on accelerator or engine dies ) and blows alot of smoke( oil or gas or both I don't know). Once the engine is warm it smooths out and the smoke goes away. My service manual has no information or diagrams on the choke light.By the way , my car is a 1984 Monte Carlo SS 305 V8. What sensor or switch is wired into the choke light? The car is not equipped with an electric EFE. If the choke is malfunctioning will that cause the smoke in the exhaust?

Answer
The choke is wired FIRST to the OIL PRESSURE SWITCH then to the choke coil. Therefore as soon as the engine starts battery voltgae passes thru the oil pressure switch to the choke coil. If you have NO battery voltgae to the coil when the engine is RUNNING, Replace the OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. IF you DO have battery voltgae to the choke coil when the engine is running, replace the CHOKE PULL OFF VACUUM BREAK on the carb as this mechanism opens the CHOKE PLATE approx 1/4" as soon as you start the engine. If it does NOT open approx 1/4", REPLACE the CHOKE PULL OFF.
