Chevrolet Repair: 1999 cavalier smoke test, smoke test, evap vent solenoid

Question
my check engine light was on 2x within a month, and the check said to replace gas cap, which i did
then it came on again and i took it to my mechanic
today, and they put it on the machine they use for
inspection and all is ok, except it comes out as PO442 evap ctrl small leak detected. my mechanic said it needs a smoke test, which they of course do not have the equipment, and i wanted to know if the dealership has one and an estimate on the cost of "just the test alone" would be without the hose, labor and taxes. i can take it to some
one i do not know, therefore, no trust, and pay $75/hour...that seems a bit much, but maybe that is the price, i don't know. exactly what and where does this test take place?
thank you for your time.

Answer
Hello Karen, Yes dealers do have this machine to smoke test a evap system. The most common parts to go bad on your car are the evap vent solenoid and the harness to the vent solenoid. You could buy both of these and install them yourself. Call the dealer for a price on them. It would take about 10 minutes for a lady to replace these, but I would have a guy do it for you. It is located just in front of the rear axle on the right side..
