Chevrolet Repair: 90 Lumina Transmission Chatter/Slipping, trans work, single mom

Question
Hi, Car has 132K, only 3rd owner. No Trans work done to my knowledge. Tranny will chatter, loosing power when going into O.D. - Once car has slowed, slips and can't decide what gear to go into 1-3rd - engine revs, then slides into gear.  Only happens when shifter is in OD position - can run ok in D position. Was going to do fluid/filter, but mechanic suggests taking apart to look at first.  Fluid is thin and smells burned. Only happens once car has been driven 20 miles or so.  Car has been consistantly driven in OD position. Trying to save car - low budget, single mom needs assistance! Have read alot about the fluid pressure control solenoid, could it be that? Would like to try least expensive choice (of course) first.  This has just started happening -could fluid/filter solve? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Ok to post question, unable to change to yes.

Answer
Hi Jennifer, By what your saying I would just drive the car in drive and not overdrive. There is a problem in the trans and I can't say how long it will last. If it does stop working on you, don't have a shop take it apart!! This will cost you tons of money. The cheapest way is to replace the trans with a used unit. There are so many used ones out there the price is very cheap. When you get a used trans you need to look at the fluid and make sure it looks good (pink) and doesn't smell burnt.
