I have a 91 GMC suburban 1500 with a 5.7 under the hood.  I noticed the last time I was driving it that it seemed to be hesatating and also had a slight miss.  The motor has 140,00 miles, and has been taken care of.  After I stopped it at a store I was unable to get it to fire-up.  It didn't even try to fire, it just turned over.  I tried to get it to fire by pouring some gas in the carb but no luck not a single cylindre fired.  I assumed that it had jumped timming, and the timming chain needed to be replaced, so I towed it home and let it sit until I had some time to fool with it.  Two weeks after it had let me down I checked the battery for charge and it was low from cranking it.  I charged it and hit the key to pump some oil up in the motor.  It started right up, but with the check engine light on.  It ran fine for about 5 minutes, then the check engine light went out and it started missing and spitting out black smoke and died.  I have done this 3 times with the same results?  HELP  I am at a loss.  It will not restart until it is completly COLD like the next day.  Thanks for any help  Wayne

Hi Wayne, I'm Not sure what your problem might be but I would check for good spark when it doesn't start. The spark should jump a gap of 1 inch from the coil. Could be a bad coil, ignition module or dist. Without looking at this one it is very hard to say. Also check the dist cap for any water inside, look for very small droplets..
Let me know what you find      Mark

Mark,
I have not been able to find the time to check the spark yet BUT, I checked the codes on the dash.  It gave me a 15 diagostic code ( coolant sensor circuit open)  could this be my problem?  If so is it the same one that my temp. gauge on the dash works off of?   Thanks Wayne

Answer
This code would make the system run very rich! This sensor is not the same one as the gauge. You will find this sensor near the thermostat, it has 2 wires going to it. If it is plugged in then I would replace the sensor. Check to make sure the terminals inside the connector look good.
