What does it mean when I accelerate my car begins to sound like a lawnmower?

I have a hard time knowing what the sound is like so let me suggest another approach: turn the ignition key "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see the mileage dissappear and instead show some 4-digit numbers preceded by a P. Tell me those numbers which are codes for possible fault causes and we'll go from there on this problem.
