Chrysler Repair: Transmission slipping?: 92 electronic trans, transmission control module, chrysler products

Question
I have a 92 chyrsler labaron that has problems catching up to speed while im driving. The problem started about a month ago and seems to be getting worse. It feels as the transmissions is slipping and doesn't want to pull of a times aftering coming to and stop. im wondering if it may be a sensor though.

Answer
Hi India,
The best thing to do if the the rpm seems to go up faster than the mph needle once you are in top gear, which would be a sigh of the trans slipping, would be to get a fault code readout of the transmission control module for a specific code that would tell what might be the cause and solution. There is a socket at the left end of the instrument panel, likely behind a small door or just under the edge that has a rectangular blue plug into which a code reader such as the Chrysler DRB II or a Snap-on Diagnostic code reader can be plugged. A transmission shop or a good independent tune up shop will have such a plug that works on Chrysler products up to the mid-90's when the system changed It is called the OBD-I system. So try to find a shop that says they have the Chrysler Data link connector and the proper reader to get the fault codes from the transmission through that specific plug (not a plug in the engine compartment by the way). Ask for the 2-digit code numbers, what they mean, they recommend, and how much it will cost. Then write back and I will comparte that to what the shop manual says about each code. The cost of the readout should be about $40. Of course it would be useful to take a look at the dip stick for the transmission to be sure you have the correct amount of ATF+4 fluid, for that too can cause slipping if low. But don't overfill it, and don't use anything but ATF+4 ifneede. You add fluid through the dipstick tube, located at the side of the transmission (not the engine).
