Chrysler Repair: 1997 LHS: no start, crank sensor, work radio

Question
QUESTION: I have a 97 lhs that I purchased with a bad engine.  car ran with bad engine but not well. Car then set for a year with bat unhooked and old engine removed. I then rebuilt a engine from a 94 and put in it.. Car turns over and all the electronics inside the car work (radio, power windows, truck lock, key phob unlooks doors, and all gauges light up) but no spark.. checked and coil only has power when key is first turned to on pos.. goes out in roughly 5 secs.. any ideas?

ANSWER: Hi Roger,
Try using the ignition key to possibly get fault codes by the check engine light flashing. On-off-on-off-on and leave on, doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then count the flashings of the light, if it does so. That is a transition time so it might not and then you would need a plug in code-reader to get engine fault codes. The fact that you do get power to the coil is good. When it doesn't return during cranking that means usually that either the cam or the crank position sensor is bad/not connected. But knowing which is helpful via a code. Crank is 11 or 0320, cam is 54 or 0340.

QUESTION: Thanks thats a great help... where is the crank sensor on this car? the manual i have is for a 98 and i dont think its in the same place

Answer
Hi Roger,
The sensor is in about the same place whether in '97 or '98 but it isn't obvious. It is located at the seam between the engine and the transmission, on the passenger side, just abouve the differential housing. The easiest way to get to it is to turn the wheels full left, then remove the passenger side tire. Get under the car and remove the 10 mm headed bolt that holds it in place, by 'feel' if you can't get a good view. It has a 3-wire connector plug. When you put the new one in be sure that there is a paper 'spacer' on the tip and that you push in on the sensor to be sure the tip touches the flex plate and hold it there while you tighten the bolt that retains that position.
