Chrysler Repair: dodge ram 1500: idle speed varies, dodge ram 1500, 4 digit numbers

Question

hi ihave a dodge ram 1500 year 2000 with a 5.2l magnum engine .When i start my truck in the morning the idle fluctuates up and down from 600rpm to 1500rpms to 2000rpms.This summer it would do the samething but it would idle out after maybe 15 secondes but now that its a little colder (45-50 degrees)it take alot longer to reach the right idle speed at least a minute or two. can you help me out thanks

Answer
Hi Peter,
Try to get a fault code readout for free at an Autozone parts store or similar nationwide parts chain. The codes are 4-digit numbers, so get the specific number(s) and write me back and we'll go from there.
That number will give us direction as to what to do. An independent shop should do a readout for under $40 if you can't get it free.
