Chrysler Repair: 97 T & C TCC Lock Up problem: disconnect?, tcc solenoid, torque converter

Question
I have a 97 T&C LXi with the 3.8 V6. Randomly, the vehicle will not idle...it lurches, then stalls. If I feel it coming, I can rev while keeping foot on brake to keep it alive. My mechanic tells me the TCC Solenoid needs to be replaced. From reading about this issue, it does seem to suggest that the lock up circuit is not disengaging the solenoid. I have seen some posts suggesting that the solenoid can be unplugged and left disengaged until I have time and money for the proper fix.

Which wire should I disconnect? How much should my mechanic charge to replace the solenoid?

Thanks much!

Answer
Hi Kurt,
As best I can tell the pcm actuates the torque converter lock up clutch via a yellow/dark green wire on pin 10 of the tcm which comes from pin 63 of the pcm. The wire is designated "torque management" so I assume that is the wire you need. This is taken from the '98 manual so be sure to check the wire color at the pins to be sure yours is the same. You can cut it at either end but leave yourself some space on either side of the cut to reconnect it later. The other approach might be to coat the specific referenced pin of either plug with some insulating coating that would prevent electrical contact. You might try some paint which you can later scrape off.
I think the trans has to be removed to replace this clutch so it will be costly. There is no 'plug' on the 4-speed transmission, unfortunately, the way there is on the 3-speed so you are going to have to cut the wire to disengage this function or prevent the connection by insulating a pin as described.
Let me know how this works out for you.
