Chrysler Repair: 1996 Dodge Avenger timing issue, crank shaft, 1996 dodge avenger

Question
I am working on a 96 Dodge Avenger.  I have replaced the water pump but in the process my son turned one of the cam shafts.  Is there any way to turn the crank and cams to get them back to the factory marks without damaging the valves.  When I tried turning the cam back to the original mark it seems to be binding.  I have heard this is a zero tolerance engine.

Answer
Hi Glenn,
Yes the V-6 2.5L is an interference type of engine. My suggestion would be to try moving the crankshaft slightly one way and the other to determine whether you can them move the cam sprocket that has been disturbed back to being aligned with the other cam shaft position, keeping in mind that they both turn clockwise. You might be able to do so in a series of small adjustments of the crank that allow you to nurse the cam that was turned back into alignment with the position of the cam that wasn't turned. Use the bolt on the crank shaft to turn it, and may pull the plugs on the front bank to make it easier to move the crank.
