Chrysler Repair: RH AXLE SHAFT, 2001 chrysler concorde, chrysler concorde

Question
QUESTION: I was wondering how to remove right front axle from transmission on 2001 chrysler concorde  thanks

ANSWER: Hi Steve,
The removal is a 2-step process. First use a prybar inserted between the trans axle housing and the inner edge of the tripod joint and lever the tripod just far enough so that it snaps free of the hidden snap-ring which holds it to the stub shaft. You may want to lever at the end of one of the trans studs or place a socket over a nut on one of the studs so as to get a nice fulcrum to lever against.  Once that is done you then work at the outer end of the half-shaft to get it released from the hub and bearing (I assume you know about that, if not let me know). Then while the outer end is supported go back to the inner tripod and pull on it (and if necessary the shaft too, simultaneously) so as to pull the tripod the rest of the way off the stub axle. What you are trying to avoid is putting any significant tension on the tripod's interior components so as to not damage them, by doing most of the separarating effort between the tripod and the stub axle of the trans. You will want to replace the snap ring and O-ring seal of the stub axle when you re-assemble.

QUESTION: Yes thanks that worked 100% I just took a punch and a dead blow hammer and tapped from the back and off it came. I also need some information on taking off the retainer cap on the side of the transfercase to get access to the output shaft bearing as it is quite sloppy and is causing quite a humming noise from about 20 km up to highway speed.I have checked both front and rear hub bearings and they are all ok, so I have narrowed it down to this one...  thanks steve

ANSWER: Hi Steve,
You are more knowledgeable than I about transaxles. I looked through the manual to see if I could find some specific procedure involving the output shaft bearing (would that be the long or the short shaft?) and didn't find a specific mention of dealing with that bearing outside of the disassembly/assembly procedures but I may not be looking for the correct terminology. Do you have any manual to work with? I have the '98 and '04 factory service manuals and they appear quite similar. Is there another name for the retainer cap on the side of the transfer case? I will look some more but about all I can suggest now is making xerox copies of the about 100 pages and postal mailing those to you. I can get copies for about 6 cents a side so it all might cost about $10 to do.

QUESTION: I would think its called something like the RH outer bearing retainer cap, It also houses the seal in it. It may also be called the differential outer bearing retainer cap, I dont have any specific manuals that im using, I am a licenced auto technition, but more formiliar with toyota products. Hope that helps steve..

Answer
Hi Steve,
Sorry for the delay but my internet connection has gone bad, so I'm using a neighbor's.
I find that there are about 26 pages in the manual on the 'final drive' = differential and output shafts and bearings. I can copy those from the '04 manual for about $4 including the postage. If you want them just give me a postal mailing address using a 'private' response. You can reimburse me after you get them by sending back nine 44- cent stamps.
