Chrysler Repair: 99 LHS CAM SENSOR, 99 chrysler lhs, pulley bolt

Question
QUESTION: I have a 99 Chrysler LHS & the car will not start when the cam sensor is connected. I have replaced the sensor already but still the same problem.

ANSWER: Hi Marvin,
I assume that it also won't start when you don't have it connected, correct? I assume you have an 0340 fault code, correct?
Did you have a paper spacer on the new sensor when installed and did you press the sensor in until the paper-covered tip touched the camshaft sprocket and then tightened up the clamp screw? If not, then remove it, make sure the paper spacer hasn't worn away and reinstall with tip in contact. If spacer is worn away then you must have had it right, so get a new spacer before reinstalling (at a dealer probably).
Then it may be the wiring: tan/yellow pin 3 of plug goes to pin 33 of pcm, black/light blue (middle pin of plug) goes to pin 43, orange pin 1 of plug goes to 44. Verify that you have 8V on the orange, and then measure between 2 and 3 while turning the engine by hand via the crank pulley bolt to observe a voltage pulse pattern from 5v to 0.3v. If you have all that, then the cam sensor signal should be OK. Try for fresth fault codes.

QUESTION: Actually the car will start without the sensor connected, it takes about 6 seconds to do do when turning over. There were not any fault codes until I started removing the cam sensor. I didn't do the work myself so I wouldn't know how it was installed but I can check for myself.

ANSWER: Hi Marvin,
That is surprising...do you get an 0340 code? The engine may not run as well, nonetheless.

QUESTION: I tried pulling the codes myself through the car but I'm getting nothing. (I don't even know if I am doing it right) The engine is not running as it should. When accelerating I have to allow the car to climb in speed very gradually or it will start to hesitate it seems as if the timing is off, and has lack of power.

Answer
Hi Marvin,
All that is consistent with a problem in the wiring or the sensor itself. Do the tests I suggested. To get a code turn the key "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see mileage change to 4 digit numbers preceded by a P.
