Chrysler Repair: No reverse: 3-speed automatic trans., chrysler newyorker, gear shift linkage

Question
Roland I have a 1988 chrysler newyorker with a 4 cyl and turbo. The tranny all of a sudden it lost reverse and wont move at all in that gear, works good in all forward gears. What would you suggest might be wrong?

Answer
Hi Robert,
If you have the 3 speed non-electronic trans the causes, aside from internal clutches requiring a rebuild, are
hydraulic pressure too low (pressure can be checked at test ports)
low/reverse band worn out
valve body malfunction or leakage
low/reverse servo/band or linkage adjustment
low fluid level.
The low/reverse band adjustment requires that the pan be dropped to gain access to the adjuster, and thus collecting the fluid is necessary when you drop the pan. Let me know if you want to do that yourself.
Those are the items that could be checked before re-building.
If you have the 4 speed electronic transaxle let me know, but I believe that trans was never used on the 4 cyl. engine.
To adjust the gear shift linkage, gear shifter in Park. Loosen bolt on gearshift cable bracket at the transmission. If this is a column shift, make sure that the preload adjustment spring engages fork on transaxle bracket. Pull the shift lever on the transmission all the way to the front detent position (park) and tighten the lock screw to 100 inch-pounds.
