Chrysler Repair: 08 Chrysler Sebring 2.4l 4-cyl, engine longevity, chrysler sebring

Question
In July of 06, I bought an 04 PT Cruiser 2.4l Turbo. It was a perfect car until 67K miles, then I blew a head gasket and cracked my block. I was stuck, and ended up having to sell it for pennies to get something to replace it. I took care of my care, got the oil changed every 3-4K like clock work, no crazy driving, no "flooring it." 9 months after this happened, I'm finally in a postition where I can get a newer car, and I really like the 08 Sebring. It has a 2.4l engine in, and of course the warranty is expired on it. I am terrified of getting this car, even though I love it. I've heard this is a common problem, no matter how well you take care of your car, but I don't know if Chrysler has attempted to fix this issue. It has 51K, which is high for its age and basically the only reason I can afford it, but I don't want it to blow up in another 10K, before I can even pay it off. Also, do you know if I would be eligible to purchase an extended warranty? I've seen some that were only available if the vehicle had less than 48K. So, am I out of luck there? Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing your advice.

Answer
The race for "expert of the month" is going down to the wire.
Chrysler "repairer" vs Microsoft "coder".
Deadline to vote is Thursday, 4 PM CT.
Click on "Thank/rate" button below, then click on "Yes" for nomination.
Thanks

Hi Lesley,
I am curious to know what you decided to do about buying the car?
Also may I ask a favor? I am competing to be 'volunteer of the month' at Allexperts which is based on nominations from questioners like yourself. If you would be so kind as the click on the "Thank/rate the expert" button below you will be taken to a page where the question "Would you like to nominate this expert to be 'volunteer of the month" is asked. If you will click on "Yes" that would be appreciated.

Hi Lesley,
On the reliability of the 2.4L turbo my suggestion would be to check the frequency of repair records that are published by Consumer Reports magazine. The local library will have the April '09 issue which should include the experiences of owners going back 5 years so you can see if there is a trend or not toward improved engine longevity as well other vital systems.  On the warranty, check with the vendors of such insurance as I have no experience with coverage and costs related to mileage.
