Chrysler Repair: Tranny Flush..Yes or No, filter drain, horror stories

Question
03 Voyager 75k. Just purchased.    Never had a flush or change.   I have heard horror stories of getting them flushed...broken rings, seals,  whole tranny dying... I want to have this voyager last 200k+...... I plan on maintaining it to the best of my ability.  What do you recommend as far as the flush?  Its a v6 3.3 Automatic

Answer
Hi Steve,
The shop manual I have for '02 references to the owner's manual on this subject, which you may have. The '98 manual suggests a drain/re-fill at 120,000 miles if normal duty, if frequent short trips at 75K miles (drain/refill/filter).
Drain of course only exchanges about one-half the fluid, while flush does it all.
I would look at and smell the fluid on the dipstick. If no burnt smell and red to brown in color, then I would leave it alone until 120k. Otherwise, flush, but make sure the refill type is ATF +4 in anycase. I am not certain whether anecdotes about the flush caused the damage or the damage caused the flush, but I suspect the latter. Nonetheless, I like to leave well enough alone unless need is clearly indicated. Be sure the shop never uses dexron type as that is damaging.
