Chrysler Repair: 97 2.5L V-6: rattling sound, water pump bearing, tappet noise

Question
QUESTION: Roland,  A couple weeks ago I noticed a rattle from the engine. (150,000 miles on engine, trans has about 120,000)  The sound was similar to an alternator or water pump bearing going bad.  This engine was overdue for the water pump & timing belt.  I used a stethoscope and noticed the noise was amplified at the water pump and the tube it is attached to.  Therefore, I replaced the water pump, timing belt, timing belt idler, and Tensioner idler.  After ensuring that the timing was correct and tension was good, I started the engine only to find that the noise was worse.  I removed the serpentine belt & p/s pump belt, so now only the engine and torque converter are spinning  - same thing.  The rattle/loose marble is related to rpm as well.  Do you have any clues?  Thanks in advance, Ted

ANSWER: Hi Ted,
i haven't had enough experience with that engine to give you anything based on that. How about tappet noise from the valve train? Changing the weight of the oil might have altered the pressure situation in the lifters, so if you changed the oil after the job that may point toward one of those lifters as a source. I wish I could give you other direction but can't. You might take it to an engine rebuilding shop and see what they might believe is the source.

QUESTION: Thanks for the super quick reply.  I may try a different oil to see what effect it may have.  Do you know anyone else (online) who might be able to help.  I am nervous about driving it.  Thanks again.

Answer
Hi Ted,
The best that I can suggest is to look over the various Groups at Autos.Yahoo.com to find one that focuses on the Sebring. I am familiar with the LeBaron Club but none of these pre-'96 cars in that group use the 2.5 V-6. But Sebring owners in such a group would doubtless give you some advice.
