Chrysler Repair: 00 2.5 v6: engine dies/recovers after 15 minutes, shaft sensors, crank shaft

Question
Read your answer about stalling/no spark while driving. Had dist. replaced last year. Is camshaft position sensor part of distributor assy? No check eng. light. When I wait 10 to 15 min.,car starts right up.. sometimes will run error free for a couple weeks. Thank you

Answer
Hi Tom
The cam shaft drives the distributor so the sensor in the distributor is called the cam sensor.
The crank shaft sensor is mounted at the seam between the engine and the transmission, on the right side (firewall side) just above the surface of the transmission housing. It is held in place by a screw. Its tip has a paper spacer so you push the sensor in until you feel it touch the surface of the transmission flex plate (flywheel) which is the surface which it 'senses' and hold it in contact while you tighten the screw to keep in in that place. The paper is rubbed off as the engine spins but leaves the tip at the correct distance from the moving plate.
The sympton you describe is typical of the breakdown of these shaft sensors.
The fault code readout is not via the check engine light but rather by watching for the odometer reading to change to show 4-digit fault code number beginning with a P, that of course occurs after you go 'on-off-on-off-on and leave on' in 5 seconds or less. The code for the crank is 0320 and for the cam is 0340. I hope it is not the cam because of the cost that is involved and you already paid for that!
