Answer
Hi Eddie,
The temp sensor on the 2.5 V-6 is located just to the side of the coolant filler tube. Drain off about a quart of coolant to lower the level in the system before you remove the sensor. Collect for re-use. Just gently release the tab on the side of the electrical plug to release it. Then remove and replace the sensor. If you have an ohmmeter you might want to check the your old sensor really is bad. It should read 7-14,000 ohms across the terminals when cold, then drop down to 700-1,000 ohm when warmed up. If it does that, then you don't have to replace the old one at all.
Because you have the '96 you can also get fault codes that might be stored in the engine computer by using the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure of an accurate flash count. The write back with the counts in order of appearance and we'll go from there.
