Chrysler Repair: 2007 Dodge Caliber tire size question, dodge caliber, inner fender

Question
I went to get tires for my wife's 2007 Dodge Caliber. Three shops said that they did not have tires "that size" for her car. Told me that I have to 'order' the tires; at $120.00 each! I was wondering if I could put on some other size that places like Walmart would keep in stock? The Walmart guy said her car has P215 80R17 tires.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi David,
I believe that you can change the aspect ratio and the P number one step either way (but in reverse of oneanother) so as to preserve load carrying capacity and overall circumference of the tires (i.e. if you decrease the aspect you increse the P). For example you could see if there is a P225 70R17. Also, keep checking around at other tire stores and Costco.  That way you may be able to find a size that is more reasonably priced. But do verify that there is no problem with clearance with the inner fender by checking at the dealer.
