my car died while I was driving it. Its an auto mantic. I replaced the fuel pump about 4 years ago. my car does turn over but will not start. there is a sound going from the back {I think its the fuel pump}. and I cant get through this black coating under my back seat to get to the access panel to the fuel pump. I do not want to drop my tank again. Is the a easy way to get the black coating off. I changed my E.G.R. valve about 4 months ago. the check engine light is not on. the bulb is not blown. please help real tight bought. 1997 chrysler cirrus v6 2.5 liter

Hi Christopher,
If you hear the fuel pump run (hum, as usual) for about 1 second when you turn the key to the 'run' position then that is normal. Tell me if there is anyother reason that you believe the problem is the pump. It only runs for a second, then starts again when you start cranking but then the starter motor it too loud to hear the pump while cranking.
The check engine light will only be 'on' when there is a problem that causes emissions to exceed standard limits.
My thought is that either the cam or the crank sensor has failed. There is a way to test those using a voltmeter, but first I would have a helper crank the engine while you check for spark at one of the spark plug wire end caps. Insert a screwdriver with an insulated handle till its tip touches the wire deep inside, then hold the screwdriver and cap with two hands and position the shaft of the screwdriver 1/4" from the cylinder head and ask the helper to crank the engine for 5 seconds. Observe for whether you get a spark to jump the gap for the full 5 seconds of cranking or not. If you don't then write back and I'll tell you how to test the sensors. If you are getting spark then wi have to find out why the mixture is wrong. Unfortunately you can't do a fault code readout with a code reader for the '97 model. But we can diagnose this!
