Chrysler Repair: 98 Town & Country: three starts and out, pushbuttons, key lock

Question
QUESTION: My Town & Country starts 3-4 times and then stalls.  On the 4th attempt there is no power and no sound from the starter.  We wait 40 minutes and then it starts and is good for about 1 month.  My garage has no clue and Chrysler didn't have any clues.

Can you please help.

ANSWER: Hi Gabe,
That behavior is characteristic of the theft alarm system not being cancelled when you unlock the door to enter the van after having secured the van previously against theft by using the power door locks, key lock, or remote control. You can try unlocking the other side door than the one your entered in order to clear the code as the wire from the usual door may be broken. Or you can never set the alarm system at all by ONLY locking the doors via the pushbuttons (the old-fashioned way) when you secure the van. Otherwise, it involves doing some investigation via a diagnostic readout box to figure out why it isn't disarming properly upon return.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,

Thank you very much for the answer.  Would I be able to disarm the alarm so this doesn't happen anymore?

Answer
Hi Gabe,
Unfortunately the alarm system is integrated into the body computer and is not a separate unit that can be separately unplugged. So the only way to defeat it is to never activate it as I described. Up to about '93 you could do the unplug routine but not since. And even then you had to do the unplugging while the engine was running or you would go into an even "harder" lock down!
So if you can change your habit of how you secure the van you should be able to avoid the problem in the future.
