Chrysler Repair: Heater blower only blows Hi: Cirrus, blower motor resistor, heater blower

Question
Hello Roland,

Regarding a 2002 Dodge Status.

We have no heater blower or heat in control panel positions 1-2-3. But we do have blower and heat in position 4.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Answer
Hi David,
The blower motor speed is moderated by a 'blower motor resistor block' which is subject to failure and the result is that it only will power the blower at full speed. The location of the block is in the internal ducting of the air distribution unit under the dash. To gain access to see it you will want to remove the under panel silencer pad on the lower edge of the dash on the right side. It has two screws on the side that faces the cabin and two nuts on the side closer to the fire wall. Once you see the housing look at the underside on the right end where the blower motor is located (turn it on if necessary for locating). Then notice the two twisted wires at the blower motor and follow them to the left to a plug which is the blower resistor block. Remove both plugs at that point. Then you will find one screw on either end of the inverted socket which when removed will allow the body of the resistor block to drop down and out of the duct. Put in a new one (dealer of parts store item) and reverse the procedure and you will get air movement at all 4 fan speeds, and no doubt heat too.
Before installing the block examine the several resistors to be sure they don't tuoch one another, separating them gently with the tip of a pencil if necessary.
