Chrysler Repair: 1994 Chrysler new yorker heater problems, blower motor resistor, automatic temperature control

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a 1994 Chrysler New Yorker. The heater is stuck on defrost and won't turn off or change to floor or vent. the fan speed won't change either. Any suggestions?  thanks a lot

ANSWER: Hi Misty,
Yes the inability to change the air distribution involves the internal doors that are operated electrically, and the blower motor adjustments is controlled by a module located in the ventilation duct adjacent to the blower itself. So what is wrong is clear, but to be specific I need to know if you have a conventional control or the automatic temperature control unit that with a digital temperature readout. So send me a follow up question telling me which one you have. Tell me if you mean something different other that the blower won't stop by the "won't turn off".

QUESTION: Thanks so much for getting back to me so fast. I have a conventional control and I do meant that the blower won't stop. It blows constantly on defrost on the highest heat and fan settings.

Answer
Hi Misty,
There are self-diagnostic test that you can run on the system but they are a couple of pages long. So I can xerox and postal mail them to you if you would like. Use the "thank and rate" tab where there is a space for comments where you can list a postal mailing address. On the blower aspect, if you remove the underpad on the lower surface of the right side dash for access you will locate the blower by listening. Follow the wires from the motor housing to a couple of plugs. Remove those plugs and then the 2 screws on either side of the sockets and a blower motor "resistor block" will drop out. Take it to a dealer for a replacement at about $25 and then reverse the process to install. That should restore all the controls of the blower motor. Then when you get the self diagnostic you can let me know what you find.
