Chrysler Repair: 2003 chrsler sebring convert- Code p0601, drb iii, chrsler

Question
Thanks! Will try to be brief-
had car emissioned and it failed due to the code p0601- Internal memory sum error...car runs fine...auto repair shop wants $600 to replace the pcm...is this something my husband can do...he does most work on our cars and has for years...is there something else on the car that I should look into before replacing the pcm...has 107,000 miles...the code seems very general...thanks for any advice,

Answer
Hi Julia,
Unfortunately the code does seem to report that there is an internal check sum code failure. My 2003 manual for the PCM says the only thing to do is to replace the PCM if it shows that code. As for do it yourself, the physical replacement is not the issue but rather the verification test that is still needed which requires the use of a Chrysler diagnostic tool. So you might want to be sure the place that does that has the Chrysler DRB-III tool and a tech who knows the procedure. I have the procedure, which covers several pages, if that is needed but it is descriptive of the LH cars rather than the Sebring but they may be identical. Let me know if you want those pages.
