Chrysler Repair: Brake Lights out, Chevy vehicle, chevy vehicle, brake master cylinder

Question
Now I know this is not the cheve section, but its a very universal thing im sure. I have a cheve Monte Carlo 1998 and I have just found out that both my brake lights are out! However, the brake light in my rear window (little red light in the bottem center of back window) still works. Does that prove that it is just both bulbs that are out, or could it STILL be the brake solenoid or what ever the thing that controls the brake lights is. Thank You either way.

Answer
Hi Roy,
Without the wiring diagrams I can't be sure. But because the bulb filaments that aren't working serve a multiple function (also for the turn signal usually), they are split off from the high mounted stop light signal right after the switch on the brake pedal (or the brake master cylinder, as the case may be). So that is not unusual for the high mounted light to work but not the lower bulbs. Without knowing how the missing filaments get there current when functioning as brake lights I can't give you a suggestion as to what is wrong, but why not check to see if the turn signals are working? I assume the bulb filaments in question serve that dual purpose, if not then I'm at a loss without the diagrams. If they aren't working for the turn signals either, then sure check the bulbs themselves. If they are, then there is something else that is the problem. But then I need a circuit...
