Chrysler Repair: How to check A/C compressor clutch, clutch action, compressor clutch

Question
Dear Roland,

I'm following up second time about my 1987 New Yorker clutch doesn't engage problem.

Well as I told you I tried bypassing pressure switch ... and now I tried to 'bypass' relay too (connecting 1 and 3 position), but nothing happened.

Well, clear question: Is there a possibility to check clutch itself? Ex. connecting directly to battery? Or something like that.

Thank you very much for your advices and time.

Jan, FL

Answer
Hi Jan,
If there was no response and the polarity of the jump was correct, then about the only other thing to try before spending on a replacement would be to try jumping it with the engine running and thus turning  the compressor pulley, just to be certain. If that doesn't show any sign of engagement then you have to believe the clutch is bad.

P.S. Thanks for the kind evaluation.

Hi Jan,
Sure, as a quick test I see no problem with jumping to the clutch and listening for it to click (without the engine running). Put + of the pin that receives the black trace wire and - to the pin that receives the dark blue/black wire.
By the way, in the normal circuit the fan relay also has to be energized or there will be no + supply to the clutch so that may be why you aren't getting any clutch action. The items that you jumped were in the ground (-) path back to the battery so that may explain why you aren't getting any clutch response.
