Chrysler Repair: van radiator fans dont work, code 1491: now what?, powertrain control module, plymouth grand voyager

Question
I found that my 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE 3.0L that when I turned on my A/C that my Engine would heat up and found that my Radiator Fans were not working.  I troubleshooted to find that it was my Coolant Temperature Sending Unit that could not be working and so replaced it.  Well I went for a drive and turned on my A/C and my let my car sit for a bit to heat but my fans failed to turn on.  The Check Engine light is on still and found that it was a OBDII Code P1491.  What do I need to do now?

Answer
Hi Todd,
The 1491 tell you what you already know: the fan control relay circuit doesn't work. So the coolant temp sensor is telling the powertrain control module that the fans need to be activiated and it has tried to do so with no response from the fans. I suspect that you have a bad relay. In fact there was a factory recall on vans of this vintage because this was too common a problem. So check with a dealer or with Daimler-Chrysler in Detroit to see if your van is covered by the recall so you can get it replaced for free. It is located in the engine compartment, left side forward near the radiator, down low on the frame rail. It is attached to the frame rail and has a 4-wire plug.
If that doesn't fix it then we can do some circuit trouble shooting but try to get the relay replaced and see if that solves the problem.
