Chrysler Repair: 02 town & country running rich, tps sensors, coolant temp

Question
I Just bought a 02 town & country 3.3. Sat outside first night (20 deg.), wouldn't start in morning. Acted like it was flooded, pulled fuel pump relay, car started(then died), replaced relay and it started but was running very rich. Only getting 12.4 mpg, coolant temp & tps seemed to be ok. Fuel pressure was at 62 psi.Replaced Map sensor, no change. one other symptom is that at wot it will not shift, loses power at about 4500rpms, lift slightly and it will shift. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Bob,
I checked with the local Chrysler dealer and was told the 58+/-5 is correct for a 2002. Thanks for the positive evaluation.

Thanks Roland, I'll check the egr valve. I'm sure it's running rich, you can see and smell it in exhaust(plus the 12.4 mpg). I have scanned for codes and there wasn't any showing. Do you know what the correct fuel pressure is? Haynes says 49psi, a dealer told me 58 +/-5psi. thanks again.

Hi Bob,
You have tried an impressive list of possible causes, and I will assume that when you say "seemed to be ok" the coolant temp and tps sensors were checked for resistance and  discontinuities, respectively. I am thinking that it may not necessarily be a too rich condition but might also be a too lean condition where the impression is given that it is too rich, but the bottom line cause is a very poor mixture one way or the other. The items that I would now look at are the egr valve to see that its stem moves freely and closes all the way firmly so that it won't be ajar either at idle when you are trying to start the car and also at WOT which is when it should also be closed. If it seems sticky try loosening the valve by using some spray solvent on the stem and moving it manually by means of a flat blade screwdriver in the slot of the stem.  The other possibility is a restricted catalytic converter which shows itself at high rpms by bogging down. I believe that can be tested for at a muffler shop.
Then of course getting a code readout might prove to be of help. While you can drive the van, now, might be the time to have a readout done at a shop or maybe Autozone will do it for free. Those are my thoughts at this moment. Please let me know if any of these suggestions bear fruit. If you get some P codes and don't have a manual let me know what they are.
