Chrysler Repair: Neutral Safety Switch, neutral safety switch, chrysler sebring

Question
Where is the Neutral Safety Switch on a 1999 Chrysler Sebring Lxi, automatic, and how do I replace it.  I know that's what it is because it would start in neutral and then now it will not start at all.  I have checked everything else it could be.

Answer
Hi Candis,
I don't have the manual for the Sebring, but if it has the same 41TE transmission as does the Cirrus/Stratus which is contemporary then the safety switch is built into the transmission of a part called the transmission range sensor. The sensor is located at the base of the manual shaft (the vertical rod that is moved by the shift cable) but it is inside the trans. There is a black 10-pin socket and plug at the base of that shaft. You can check whether the p/n safety switch is connected and working properly by finding pin 5 of that socket (the wire on the plug to that pin of the socket is black/light blue and its other end is at the starter relay, black/white at #83). It should be floating unless you have the trans in park or neutral in which case that pin should be grounded. The wire goes to the coil of the starter relay (where its color is Black/white, on pin labelled 83 on the relay). So you could also ground the black/white wire and try the starter just to verify that it is the p/n switch that is not getting grounded. If you need to get to the rang3 switch let me know and I can tell you how.
If the Sebring doesn't use the 41TE trans, then none of the above applies and I can't help.

P.S. I will respond to the duplicate question with a form type of response. Excuse the impersonal nature of that.
