Chrysler Repair: 1994 New Yorker, diagnostic capability, chrysler drb

Question
I'm not sure if you cover this but it's worth a try. I am having a transmission rebuilt. The guy did it and now says it is the computer that controls the transmission. I have been told by a friend that if you unplug the computer and shift the car manualy it should change gears. Is this true? I am not sure if I can trust the person doing the car.

Answer
Hi Roger,
I can't tell you whether it will shift gears manually after you disconnect the computer. I have not heard of that possiblity before. About the only advice I can offer you is that there is an onboard diagnostic capability in the trans controller (including clues as to whether the controller might be the cause) and it can be readout by a Chrysler DRB II tool. The readout occurs at a 6-pin plug located under the dash on the driver's side. There are several dozen two digit code numbers for various problems that may reveal what the problem is with the entire transmission unit. So if the mechanic doesn't have or hasn't had the codes readout, it might be well worthwhile to have that done at a dealer that has that diagnostic tool. If you get some code numbers, ask what they are specifically, what they indicate, what they propose to do in response, and how much more it will cost. Then let me know and I'll take a look at my manual to see if that makes any sense.
